ELSIE ROCKWELL'S BIOGRAPHY
Elsie Rockwell (Mexican citizen) obtained a Masters degree in History at the University of Chicago, and studied at the Institute of Anthropological Research, UNAM. Received the degree of Doctor of Science, specializing in educational research, the Cinvestav. After working with indigenous education projects in Oaxaca and the Secretariat of Public Education in Mexico, he enlisted in 1973 at the Department of Educational Research (DIE) Research Center and Advanced Studies of IPN. He was founding professor of the Master of Educational Research DIE, where he has taught courses and seminars on ethnography, educational work, culture, language and education. Served as head of the DIE (1986-1990).In the DIE, developed a line of best-known educational research: anthropology of education. His ethnographic studies on teaching work and everyday life in school and the thesis addressed in this line, marked a milestone in the study and reflection on school cultures. In the nineties, he resumed his interest in history for a study on the linkages between federal postrevolutionary state formation and construction of school cultures, in the case of Tlaxcala. During the past year sabbatical (2005-2006), conducted an ethnographic study in primary schools in Paris.She is the author of numerous publications in several languages. Between 1975 and 1990, he coordinated the development of two series of Community Instructor's Manual (the second called Dialogue and Discover), by agreement between the National Council for the Promotion of Education and the CINVESTAV. The book, daily school (FCE 1995), ethnographic studies capítulosde meets primary school in Mexico, including the essay "De traces fences and paths." His most recent book, Making school to State (COLMICH, CIESAS, CINVESTAV, 2007), deals with the study of the history of post-revolutionary educational reforms seen from Tlaxcala. He has published articles in Paedagogica Historica, written Culture & Society, Education et Société, Anthropology and Education, Journal of Social Anthropology, Human Development, among other journals and book chapters, coordinated by national and foreign researchers. His recent publications and current projects are located in the field of anthropology and history of literacy in rural and indigenous.In his academic career, has participated as a guest teacher and member of committees at various institutions (Universities of Paris, Ghent, Arizona, Buenos Aires, Minas Gerais, as well as CIESAS, ENAH, FLACSO and El Colegio de Michoacán). He has lectured at international conferences and is an active member of several academic societies and editorial boards. Was Academic Secretary of the Mexican Society of History of Education (period 2003-2005). SNI is a researcher and member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. In 2007, received the award Heberto Castillo, in the category Education, Science and Society, "Emilia Ferreiro Award, by the City of Mexico.In 2008, he received the INAH Francisco Javier Clavijero, History and Ethnohistory, by Make School Make State post-revolutionary reforms seen from Tlaxcala.
